Check out the official article on our newspaper website, The Fresh Print! AP Classes & Dual Enrollment: Find the Help You Need
Middletown High School has multiple AP and Dual enrollment classes for nearly any subject you want to go into. These classes are highly encouraged for college success and can help you get well paying jobs in the future. But, students who are still trying to make their way through high school don’t really know how to get these classes. This article is supposed to bring light to what these classes do and how to enroll in them so that everyone has the opportunity to thrive in life.
AP classes and Dual enrollment are specialized classes that help you gain college credits. Despite these classes doing technically the same thing, there is a difference between them. Dual enrollment classes are for earning college credits at your community college, while AP Classes get you credits on a national level. These credits can be used to help you get either an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in college. Usually it requires 2 years of General Education Classes before you can get these said degrees. When doing these General ed classes, the college credits you get from AP and Dual enrollment can zoom you through with ease.
To enroll in AP classes, you have to be in your junior year, but Dual enrollment can be taken any year of high school. The person you want to talk to if you want to enroll is the new AP Supervisor Mrs. Sabatier, you can find her at the library. Although Mrs. Schneider, the previous AP Supervisor is a great help when it comes to this topic.
At the end of every AP Class, there is a test that you have to pass to gain college credits. To pass the test, a score of 3 out of 5 is needed, almost every AP class consists of a 5 question test that is taken at the end of the year. In order to take the test it costs $90, or $40 for low income students.
Dual Enrollment is a lot easier than AP classes but they aren’t as useful. Dual Enrollment Classes are normal classes that you can take any year of high school, they just happen to give you college credits. These classes can be chosen when selecting your classes for the next year, I suggest talking to the counselor to see what classes are considered dual enrollment.
If you want the best you can get out of school, AP classes are highly recommended, the teachers at Middletown High also support this. They often share lists of the best students at the school and recommend them to classes that they think they’ll do well in. If you do well in Mr. Austin's world history, then you’ll most likely be recommended to World History Honors or APUSH.
AP Classes might seem hard but they are a must-have when planning to go to college, I would recommend it. Any class that gains you college credits during high school, rather it be AP or Dual Enrollment, is a shortcut to getting a college degree and a well paying job. Now that you are armed with this new variety of opportunity, I hope you can strive to be the best student you can be while preparing for the future.
